Writer's Block

Writer's Block

Sitting on your computer staring at a blank screen? Your hearts in the right place and you really are trying but just nothing is coming out? Writer's block is lurking behind every great author and it's a daily battle to slay the beast and move on with your writing career. It's an obstacle we all have as writers and one that many struggle to overcome. Here are three tips on how to defeat writer's block and get that book finished.

1) I don't know of a single author who writes one draft and it's ready to be published. We all start with a rough draft of our book then work it over and over and over before it's even ready to be read by anyone else. The point is when you write just get it out. Objective one isn't to make your writing perfect. Your first goal should just be to get the story out and written. Trust me there will be plenty of revisions and edits to come. Don't put pressure on yourself to get it right the first draft, it wont happen. Good, bad or ugly just get the first draft written.

2) Think about your story and what you will be writing throughout the day. Trust me if you already know what your going to write before you sit at the computer the process will be much smoother and easier. On a daily basis my mind is thinking about characters, plot and ideas for my next writing session. That way instead of sitting and staring at a blank screen waiting for inspiration, I've been searching for inspiration throughout the day and I just have to write it down.

3) No excuses. There will always be reasons why you can't write, of how you "missed" your writing time that day. Don't allow yourself any middle ground or room for reasons to justify not writing. You either want it bad enough where your going to get it done or you don't. You will always find time for the things most important to you.
